In the last several years, Major League Baseball has seen an influx of exciting young talent.  I thought it would be fun to look at some of these players, assess the current value of their cards, and determine if it is prudent to buy, sell, or hold the player based on their potential performance.

Austin Riley

Club: Atlanta Braves

Position: Third Base

Age: 24

Verdict: Sell

Riley started 2021 on fire.  Like his team, he has cooled off as the season has progressed.  At the time of writing, Riley has a batting average of .282 and an OPS of .857.  He is on pace to hit 27 home runs and knock in 80 runs for the season.  These are solid statistics, but not quite enough to get excited.  I don’t think Riley will ever be more than an above-average player.  In addition, as long as he is in Atlanta, he will be overshadowed by teammates like Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies.  One of Riley’s rookie cards is from 2019 Topps Chrome Update.  In PSA 9 condition, this card sells for about $40 on eBay.  There are better places for your money.  Sell Riley’s cards if you own them.
