Regrets, I’ve Had A Few … (Part 1 of 2)
Willie McCovey
A teammate of Willie Mays, McCovey is often overlooked by collectors, but McCovey was one on the premier players of the 1960s, winning the National League MVP in 1969. In addition, he was a six-time All-Star and was a first ballot Hall of Fame selection in 1986, appearing on 81.4 percent of the votes cast. McCovey’s rookie card is from the 1960 Topps set. PSA 6 copies of this card cost around $300.
Steve Garvey
Garvey spent most of his nineteen-year professional career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he won a World Series in 1981. He also was a ten-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and won the National League MVP in 1974. Garvey is not currently in the Hall of Fame. To get there he would need to receive support from twelve of the sixteen members of the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee. This group evaluates the credentials of players retiring between 1980 and the present who were not elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Garvey’s 1971 Topps rookie in PSA 7 condition is $200.
