“Shoeless Joe” received a lifetime ban from baseball from commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for his participation in a conspiracy to fix the 1919 World Series. This story has been imbedded into the American consciousness and is the subject of numerous books and movies such as Field of Dreams and Eight Men Out. F. Scott Fitzgerald even references the 1919 controversy in his novel, The Great Gatsby. Although he was a fantastic player with a .356 lifetime batting average, Jackson makes my list mainly because he is a fascinating historical figure.
