MLB Generation Next (Part 2)
Jacob deGrom
Club: New York Mets
Position: Starting Pitcher
Age: 33
Verdict: Hold
At 33, deGrom may be a stretch for a “generation next” list. However, I have included him because of his relative recent success. In addition, we are seeing starting pitchers like Greinke, Verlander, and Scherzer have quality seasons into their late thirties. DeGrom has been dominate over the last four years. He has been an All-Star three times, won 2 Cy Young Awards and led the National League in strike outs twice. This season he appears headed to his third Cy Young Award and is yet again the league leader in strike outs.
DeGrom’s 2014 Topps Update in a PSA 9 is a pricey $250, and I would not be a buyer at that price. If you already own a deGrom rookie or two, the hold or sell decision comes down to whether he has another five good years in him. If you believe he does, hold deGrom. He will possibly win another Cy Young award and join the pitchers mentioned above on the road to Cooperstown. If you believe there is not much left in the tank, sell you deGrom cards during the last month of the 2021 regular season when post-season award and Mets playoff hype heats up.
