GOATS and Grails: A Personal Dream (Football Edition)
Walter Payton 1976 Topps #148
Position: Running Back
Team: Chicago Bears (1975-1987)
Pro Football Hall of Fame: 1993
Known as “Sweetness” for his grace and soft-spoken demeanor, Payton was one of the most complete players the NFL has ever seen. When he finished his 13-year career, he held records for rushing yards, touchdowns, carries, yards from scrimmage, and all-purpose yards. He also retired with the most receptions by a non-receiver and was a ferocious blocker. For all his skill on the field, Payton was loved by those who knew him off it. Hall of Fame NFL player and coach Mike Ditka described him as the greatest football player he had ever seen—but even greater as a human being. The NFL’s Man of the Year Award, presented annually honoring volunteerism and charity work, is named in Payton’s honor.
